The propane cylinder that you use for your Montana home’s outdoor grill cannot just be thrown out with your everyday garbage. In fact, there are specific protocols for disposing of these grill tanks. If these protocols are not properly followed, you could find yourself in a dangerous situation.
If a propane cylinder is not 100% empty when you discard it, it can explode as it goes through certain machines at a recycling center. This can potentially injure workers at the recycling center and cause a fire or other damage to the facility and its equipment.
So let’s review exactly how you can safely dispose of a propane cylinder.
When the time comes to get rid of your grill’s propane cylinder, you should properly recycle it. You will know it is time if you notice rust, dents, or other damage. There are a few ways to do this:
The first option is to bring the cylinder to your propane supplier or another propane provider in your area. They should be able to swap out your old tank for a new one quickly and easily.
If, for whatever reason, you cannot make it to a propane provider, you can contact your local public works department or household hazardous waste management office. They can provide guidance on how to safely dispose of your tank.
Alternatively, you can see if a scrap metal dealer will take your empty cylinder.
Before you take your grill tank anywhere, make sure you brush up on standard propane safety practices.
Your cylinder should always be upright during transport. It should also be secured in a well-ventilated area of your vehicle so that it doesn’t roll around or shift.
Exchanging or refilling your cylinder should be the last thing you do before you return home to ensure your tank isn’t sitting in a hot car for too long.
When you arrive home, store your full propane cylinder in a cool, well-ventilated area that is a safe distance from any flammable materials. It should also be kept out of direct sunlight.
