In 1906, the area that would eventually become Hysham was offered by the U.S. government to homesteaders. An Iowan rancher named Charlie J. Hysham moved to the region to manage the Flying E cattle ranch. Shortly thereafter, the Northern Pacific Railroad built a siding to accommodate the ranch. This was the root of the town that would form around it. A lumberyard, a blacksmith’s shop and a schoolhouse followed. The town of Hysham was officially incorporated in 1916.
