How Long Does A Propane Tank Last?

What you need to know about your tank and fuel

propane tank Big Timber, MT If you are a Montana homeowner who uses propane to fuel appliances and equipment around your home, you may very well think of your propane tank as a hub of your home. At the very least, you probably consider it an important piece that is worth taking care of and paying attention to. If this sounds like it applies to you, take a look at the below information regarding your propane tank.

How long to expect a propane tank to last

The good news for any homeowner who has a propane tank on his or her property is that that propane tank should last for a while as long as it is high quality and well maintained throughout the years.

Usually an aboveground propane tank lasts for about 30 years. You won’t get quite as much time out of an underground tank, but those should still last between about 20 to 30 years (the exact time frame partially depends on the type of soil it is in and whether or not it was installed properly).

How long propane lasts

20 to 30 years may sound like a long time and it is! But the propane that goes in your tank lasts even longer than that! In fact, propane essentially has no shelf life or expiration date. It will pretty much last forever. Its quality and efficiency doesn’t diminish or decrease over time either.

How much propane should go in your propane tank

Propane tanks come in a variety of sizes. You can commonly find propane tanks that are 250 gallons, 500 gallons and 1,000 gallons. Selecting a size that works for you depends on what you are using propane for, how many appliances you are powering with propane, how old those appliances are, the size of your home and approximately how much propane you plan on using on a daily basis.

But choosing a 500-gallon propane tank does not mean that 500 gallons of propane should go in that tank. In fact, a propane tank should only ever be about 80% full. This leaves room for the gas to expand, which it will do as temperatures rise. Filling your propane tank beyond this 80% point is a safety hazard and can put you and your home at serious risk.

Why people choose to use propane

Propane having an infinite shelf life is far from the only reason to use propane. Homeowners and business owners opt to use the fuel because of its versatility, efficiency, accessibility, dependability and its safety record. On top of that, it is clean-burning, green and certainly an environmentally friendly choice.
